Auditor's Duties

Chief Fiscal Officer

  • Accounts for millions of dollars received by the county each year
  • Issues checks for all county obligations
  • Distributes tax dollars to townships, villages, cities, school districts, libraries and other county agencies
  • Monitors county funds and maintains official records of receipts, disbursements and fund balances 
  • Keeps books for elected officials and other county agencies and outside agencies, such as park districts, health departments, conservation districts and regional planning commissions
  • Distributes motor vehicle license fees, gasoline taxes, estate taxes, fines, and local government funds in addition to real estate, personal property and manufactured home taxes
  • Prepares the county's annual Comprehensive Annual Report (CAFR)
  • Handles unclaimed monies
  • Prepares payroll as paymaster for the county and maintains all payroll records
  • Prepares and publishes monthly and annual cash reports

Chief Assessor

  • Establishes the value of all real property within the county
  • Reappraises property every six years
  • Maintains property maps
  • Manages the Board of Revision, which also includes the County Commissioner and Treasurer 
  • Administers tax reduction programs, such as CAUV and Homestead
  •  Conducts forfeited land sales

Sealer of Weights & Measures

  • Enforces weights and measures laws
  • Prosecutes violations throughout the county
  • Inspects and tests the accuracy of weighing and measuring devices in the purchase and sale of commodities, such as retail store scanners and scales for pre-packaged items, gas pumps and firewood
  • Conducts a variety of community awareness programs that promote consumers’ rights and responsibilities in the market place

Additional Duties

  • Receives and processes real estate exemptions
  • Issues dog licenses, vendor licenses and cigarette licenses 
  • Board of Revision – Secretary
  • Budget Commission – Secretary
  • Records Commission - Member
  • Data Processing Board – Administrator and Secretary
