Ashtabula County Auditor Receives Auditor of The Year Award
Ashtabula County Auditor Roger A. Corlett was honored by County Auditors as the 2018 recipient of the “Richard J. Makowski Award for the Outstanding County Auditor of the Year”. The award was presented by Fairfield County Auditor Jon A. Slater, outgoing president of the County Auditors’ Association of Ohio (CAAO), at their annual conference on November 15, 2018. The award was started in 1996 to honor the late Richard J. Makowski, County Auditor of Geauga County and CAAO President in 1995. Mr. Corlett is the 23rd recipient of this prestigious award.
Mr. Slater noted that Auditor Makowski exemplified what it took to become an ‘exceptional’ County Auditor. A hard worker who never gave up on a worthy cause, he could always find a way to bring people together to accomplish the impossible. He always brought out the best in his staff and the people he worked with in the CAAO.
Roger Corlett was first elected in 2006 and took office the following year, the beginning of “the worst recession since the Depression,” he said. He is clearly an outstanding county auditor; always willing to use his knowledge as a CPA to assist County Auditors with challenges and questions relating to accounting or IRS issues. Roger shares his time and talents as well as the time and talents of his employees. He has been a leader in the Northeast District serving as Secretary in 2009 and President 2010 and 2011 and as a Northeast District representative to the CAAO Legislative and Executive Committees.
Mr. Corlett was born in Ashtabula County and has lived there all his life. He married his high school sweetheart Shirley in 1968. They have two children, both living and working in Cincinnati, and three grandchildren. After graduating from Ashtabula High School, Roger enlisted in the Air Force and was stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He received a commendation medal for meritorious service and was honorably discharged.
Upon returning home he attended and graduated cum laude from Cleveland State University with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration and Accounting. He was hired into an accounting firm and passed the CPA exam while working full-time. Later, Roger became a partner and officer in the firm, working there for 32 years.
Roger currently serves on the boards of Ashtabula Foundation, Ashtabula County Medical Center, and New Leaf Church and volunteers for community activities such as the Farm Bureau’s Ag Day, Feed the Hope, and the American Heart Association’s annual Heart Walk. He had the privilege of graduating from LEADERship Ashtabula County and served on that board for several years. He also belongs to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants; Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants; Government Finance Officers Association; IAAO; and Beta Gamma Sigma – International Business Honor Society.
The CAAO includes all 88 County Auditors. Now entering its 152nd year, the Association was established to promote and protect the interests of the taxpayers of Ohio and to improve the administration of county government.
