Property Search Education Session Led by County Auditor David Thomas

Ashtabula- The Ashtabula County District Library was the site of learning and public engagement Wednesday as County Auditor David Thomas and staff held another education session for residents.

Staff members Dennis Huey, Heidi Barringer, and Deb Mohney spoke to a crowd of 20 in person and virtually about the different resources available to the public in the Auditor’s Office, the Courthouse, and online for those want to research their property.

“People are always curious about the history of their older homes like who built it and when, what the style of the home is, and what their property looked like in the past,” said County Auditor David Thomas.

The Auditor’s Office hosts several education sessions yearly on a variety of topics but property searching and historic homes gets the most interaction according to Thomas.

Attendees in person at ACDL and online heard about different ways individuals can research property records and learn historical information about homes and their community. Often, the Auditor’s Office is the first place residents should go to get basic information and then be pointed in the right direction.

The Ashtabula County District Library and Ashtabula County Recorder Barb Schaab’s office are also good resources for those searching as well.

“Our staff are always happy to help point folks in the right direction or help with our office’s resources too,” shared Auditor Thomas. “I encourage you to reach out to us if you want to learn more about your property or other history.”

Those unable to attend can view the recorded video on the Auditor’s website including print outs given during the session and see contact information for staff and resources.

“The key is helping people get started with where they need to look and what is available to them,” said Auditor Thomas. “Our packet has a ton of resources and we are always able to help answer questions.”

Thomas encourages those who have questions or missed the session to stop into the Auditor’s Office in Jefferson or give their office a call to get answers and start on the path towards learning about properties.
