County Auditor Releases November Primary Levy Estimator

Jefferson- Voters in Ashtabula County will soon be casting their ballots during early voting for this November’s election. Ashtabula County Auditor David Thomas and his office have released their levy estimator for voters to use prior to going to the polls.

Thomas announced the November 5th general election levy estimator is now available before early voting begins October 8th. There are a total of 32 levies on voters’ ballots this November with some tax districts seeing no levies and other areas having multiple requests.

“We want voters to use the estimator to help them decide prior to voting what is in their best interest as taxpayers,” said Real Estate Manager Scott Yamamoto.

Voters can use the Auditor’s Levy Estimator to see what a levy would cost their specific property and the type of levy they will see.

Of the 32 levies, 11 levies are tax increase requests to voters. The Geneva Township Fire levy is the only additional or new levy being put before the voters. If passed, taxpayers would pay $70 per $100,000 of property value in Geneva Township.

Ashtabula Township Fire and Kingsville Township Fire/EMS are each requesting a Replacement with an Increase of tax rate meaning property owners will be asked for 5 mills in Ashtabula Township or $175 per $100,000 of value and 4 mills in Kingsville Township or $140 per $100,000 of value.

The remaining levies requesting an increase are strictly Replacements meaning the tax rate is brought up to current values as opposed to when the levies were originally passed.

“Folks can see what they are currently paying for levies on the Auditor’s website or reach out to our office to ask questions,” stated Yamamoto. “Ultimately, these increases in taxes are up to the voters and what they are willing to pay for services.”

Ashtabula County and counties across Ohio were hit hard last year with rising home values due to the real estate market. The Auditor’s Office encourages property owners to contact their local governments requesting additional tax dollars for questions on the need for these dollars and how they will be used.

To learn more about levies and property owner’s tax liabilities, residents are encouraged to visit the County Auditor’s website at https://auditor.ashtabulacounty.us/dnn/ or call 440-576-3785 to learn more. The Levy Estimator is available under the Real Estate tab on the Auditor’s Home Page.
