Weights & Measure Award-Old Mill Pantry

Auditor David Thomas Awards Old Mill Pantry Excellence in Measurement Award

Jefferson- The Ruck Family has been an institution in Austinburg for over 15 years providing a variety of foods, feed, and home goods products through the Austinburg Mill, Better-N-Bulk, and now with their new business the Old Mill Pantry.

Ashtabula County Auditor David Thomas surprised the family with his 2024 Excellence in Measurement Award to recognize their service to the community and above and beyond excellence in their scales.

“I want to congratulate you on your many years of good weights and stellar products,” Auditor David Thomas told Bob and Karen Ruck and their staff recently.

Karen Ruck had begun her passion of providing bulk food and treats in 2009 and that operation expanded into the Better-N-Bulk store on Route 45 in Austinburg and now into the newly built Old Mill Pantry on Mill Street in Austinburg.

“We love what we do and serving our customers and making this a family business here in Austinburg,” said Karen Ruck. “Exciting things are happening here and we’ve been very busy since opening in October.”

The Auditor’s Office celebrated with the Rucks and enjoyed seeing the newly built store according to Thomas.

Newly hired Weights and Measures Inspector Zac Erb joined for the award presentation as well. “Zac has been a tremendous asset to the county and our work,” said Auditor Thomas. “He has hit the ground running after the retirement of Jim Varckette and we are excited to watch him grow and learn.”

Auditor Thomas and Varckette started the Excellence in Measurement Award in 2019 to recognize the local businesses which go above and beyond in accuracy and service to the public with their scales. Recipients include the Richcreek Gas Station in Pierpont, Cherry Valley Processing, Tony Orlando’s Grocery Store in North Kingsville, Cantini’s Market in Rock Creek, and the Jefferson Mill.

“The Auditor’s Weights and Measures programs saves the consumers money and ensures they are being protected along with the businesses that serve the public,” stated Auditor Thomas.
